Adventure Defined

We use the”A” word a lot so it needs to be defined for our purposes here.  At The FARP adventure means choosing curiosity over comfort and stepping into the unknown. It’s the willingness to explore new places, try unfamiliar things, and embrace challenges that stretch your family. Adventure doesn’t have to be extreme or far away—it can be as simple as taking a different path, learning a new skill, or saying “yes” when it would be easier to say no.

Being adventurous as a family isn’t about climbing Everest or living out of a van (unless that’s your thing). It’s about choosing experiences over screens, and memories over routines. Did that rhyme? Adventure, in its many forms, gives families something increasingly rare: shared stories that actually get retold. It’s these stories that bond parents and children for life.

Have you noticed we haven’t mentioned camping yet? We believe in all that camping can provide a family, but adventure can happen without ever spending the night in a tent (Side note: tent camping is the only true camping. Don’t come at us RV people). Adventure helps our kids learn that the world is bigger than their backyard and that new situations aren’t something to fear, but something to figure out. Parents get to see their children solve problems, build confidence, and surprise themselves. Those moments stick.

Adventure also builds resilience. We have seen this play out over and over again. When you’re with a group of children and the plans change, the children raised with a sense of adventure adapt. When it rains on your campsite (uh oh, we mentioned camping), or someone forgets the marshmallows, families learn flexibility and teamwork—skills that matter far beyond the trip itself.

And let’s be honest—adventure makes life more fun. It breaks up routines, sparks conversations, and gives everyone something to look forward to. It doesn’t have to be expensive, extreme, or perfectly planned. Sometimes adventure is as simple as exploring a nearby park, taking the long way home, or trying something new just because it’s there.

For adventurous families—and those that want to be—adventure is less about the destination and more about the mindset. It’s choosing to lean into the unknown together and discovering, along the way, that the best parts of life often happen outside your comfort zone.
