Dismals Canyon

About
Dismals Canyon, located in Franklin County, Alabama, is a seasonally-operated (March-November), sandstone gorge that was declared a National Natural Landmark in May 1974. It has two waterfalls and six natural bridges, but it’s claim to fame is it is one of only a few places on Earth where insects called dismalites (“glow worms”) can be found. The larval forms of these flies emit a bright blue-green light to attract food and mates. They cover the canyon walls. Night tours are conducted to view the dismalites. It is not a long hike (1.5 miles) but because it is considered a Natural Terrain Trail, it is not necessarily an easy hike. Camping is available in both traditional campsites (6 secluded sites) and in cabins (2). If you plan to stay, reservations are a must.
